Chemical Change
2H2+O2à
2H2O
Hydrogen plus Oxygen makes water
Learning Target and Criteria for Success
I will learn about different kinds of mixtures.
I will be
able to explain why creating a mixture
is an example of physical change.
Mixture
Two or more substances that are mixed together, but not
chemically combined.
Examples
Salad
Trail Mix
Cookie dough
Two Types of Mixtures
Heterogeneous: the parts of the mixture are not uniform
Two Types of Mixtures
Homogeneous: the parts of the mixture are uniform
Solution
A homogeneous mixture where one substance is dissolved in
the other.
Colloid
A mixture where one substance is suspended in
another.
We are going to make some of these mixtures in the lab!
Remember to follow all lab safety rules! Do not eat or smell anything, wear
your goggles the whole time, listen to my directions!!!
Reflection
Explain why creating a mixture is an example of a physical
change. What is taking place with the molecules of oil and water mixture?

Burning a piece of wood is a chemical change. Explain how
you can tell it is a chemical change? What is happening with the molecules when
the chemical change takes place?
